Good Morning Company Girls!
Well, it's finally Friday...it's been a week filled with appointments everyday and this is the first day without any.....I'm sitting here trying to decide just what to do.....do I clean up the house (which desperately needs it), do I do some laundry, do I go and visit my mom (who I haven't been able to visit for awhile), do I try a new bread recipe, do I make some Irish Soda bread to take to my mom, do I just sit and work on my quilt....or..do I just sit and stare off into space?
hmmmmm...decisions, decisions...what's a girl to do.....
Lately, I've been battling a lot of fatigue and two health practitioners suggested it could have something to do with my thyroid (which stopped working years ago and for which I ingest a small little pill each day to compensate for it)....last year they upped the dosage of said pill so I really didn't want to go that route again..........so I went to dear old google....I think you could find out just about anything on google, don't you? Anyways, after living with this for about fourteen years, I actually found out that there are a few things I shouldn't be eating!! Who knew! You'd think that doctors might mention this little fact, don't you? At least 5 different sites mentioned the same list of negative foods that weren't a good thing for my non-functioning thyroid! Some are much easier to live with then others but the biggest ones are canola oil and anything with soya in it.......do you know that all our manufactured breads, salad dressings, a lot of condiments, chocolate bars all have canola oil, or soya oil, or soya lecithin (I can't even say the word properly!)...this makes eating somewhat of a challenge! So...I've been looking up recipes for homemade salad dressings, even homemade Miracle Whip, if you can believe it...and I made my first loaf of whole wheat bread this week! Fortunately, and my son will be pleased to hear this....hubby unpacked my bread maker that said son gave to me a year ago Christmas and I finally put it to good use...and it will get a lot of use...no more store bought bread....I'm tired of feeling tired!
On another note, Maya got to Costa Rica safely and is really enjoying herself.....she said she was nervous at the first flight but the second was a piece of cake! Oh no, I think we've created a monster!...now, whenever Don and I go away she's going to be in a bad mood cause she wants to go too! I'm really glad that she's been able to have this experience...she says the weather is great and laughed (she called on skype) when I said we were preparing fora snow blizzard this week! She is doing a lot of maintenance type stuff this week but apparently next week they work with the kids....I just pray every day that she'll be a blessing to someone that day. She's a good kid.
Daughter-in-law Jenn had a check-up at the doctor's yesterday...poor kid is overwhelmed with nauseousness and dizziness...but she did hear the hearbeat..160/minute and the doctor puts the due date the first few days of August...a summer baby....isn't that great! They usually don't have snow in Parry Sound in August so hopefully that wont be a problem, this time!

I didn't know about all that stuff could cause the fatigue. It is a challenge to make meals when there are diet restrictions. I can't imagine if my kids had food allergies or diabetes. I am glad to hear that Maya is having a good time. She will be a wonderful blessing there. Prayed for the little one on the way. Hope you will enjoy your 'day off' from appts.
I am beginning to realize how much what we eat affects us. Much to my children's dismay, I am really trying to go to more whole foods, fruits and veggies, etc. They don't like it but I can tell such a difference in the way I feel! Hope you feel better soon.
So excited Maya made it safely. Our children's minister went to Costa Rica last summer and was forever changed. Our church is sending another team this summer and we have been raising money to "adopt" children to buy them school uniforms and Bibles. I can't wait to hear her reports, I have heard it is beautiful there!

Wow, Canola oil. I use it ALL the time. No wonder I am so tired all the time. Maybe I should check this out. I am so glad I came to your blog!
Marie, it's so good to catch up with you! I pray you will get these health issues ironed out. I know you don't have time for that! I hope the diet changes will be a success for you. Maybe today you will get some rest.
Will be praying for Maya too. What an awesome adventure! I know she will be a blessing.

Yay for Google! I'm with you -- sometimes I think doctors leave out the most important parts -- the things that go beyond medicine.
Wish I could try some of that bread. Perhaps I'll dust off the bread maker we got for our wedding (um, 10 years ago) and give it a whirl again.

Finding things out on Google, isn't that a wonderful thing. Just yesterday my 12 year old son said, "If duct tape can't fix it, it's trash. If you can't find it, Google can." Duct tape & Google what else do we need? But really, I am glad that you are finding out what will help you not feel tired. I have been feeling tired, too. So this reminds me to look at what I'm eating and change the diet. But that is not always easy as a nutritionist once said, "It is easier to get someone to change religions than to change how they eat." Or something like that. It is hard to change how you eat...keep pressing on with that.

Wow, I had no idea! I have problems with carbohydrates, so I know how hard it can be to cook around a condition! So glad Maya made it safe and is enjoying her time! Our church has a team leaving tomorrow morning for Costa Rica! Hope you have a wonderful week and feel better soon,

GOOD FOR YOU taking charge of your health. It can be VERY frustrating when you follow a doctor's advice, don't feel better - and THEN find out you could have made other few small changes to improve your health... We're all so differently made, I can imagine doctors get frustrated sometimes, too... Hopefully you DO feel better with some dietary changes!!!

Hi Marie, I am glad that you found out what might be causing your fatigue. A summer baby! That is wonderful. It is funny you mention snow, we go so excited here whenever we SEE snow, that I sometimes forget that there are other places in the world where snow can be a nuisance.
It seems as if the stuff you need to eliminate are the processed "fake" things. I would recommend reading the textbook/cookbook Nourishing Traditions to help you out. Also, if you pop back over to my blog there's a link for a site called Cooking Traditional Foods, it would probably be a help.
I already avoid canola oil as much as possible and try to eat a more traditional diet, but it can be a challenge.
